ENG CMU x Mids CMU x NUOL Drives Laos Toward the EV Era Through “Prospect Supply Chain for Small BEV,” Empowering a New Generation of Technicians to Support the Lancang-Mekong EV Industry

The Supply Chain and Engineering Management Research Unit (SCEM), Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University, Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary School, Chiang Mai University (Mids) in collaboration with the National University of Laos (NUOL), organized the “Small Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Maintenance and Skill Development” workshop in Vientiane. The initiative aims to prepare Lao technicians and energy sector personnel for the transition from internal combustion engines to digital-age vehicles, aligning with the Lao government’s ambitious goal of reaching 30% EV integration by 2030.
The project emphasized both theoretical and hands-on learning to ensure participants can professionally diagnose and maintain complex electric systems. The training was led by expert faculty and private sector specialists, including Professor Dr. Apichat Sopadang, Assistant Professor Dr. Anucha Promwangkwa from Chiang Mai University, and Mr. Weerasak Paenphuang from WPEV Co., Ltd. They shared expertise across key topics:
- The Anatomy of an EV: Deep dive into lithium-ion battery arrays and regenerative braking systems.
- Live Diagnostics: Troubleshooting the complex software that serves as the “brain” of modern EVs.
- Circular Economy and Supply Chain: Recycling old batteries for solar energy storage solutions.
The workshop successfully attracted over 50 participants. The training took place from May 5-6, 2026, at Holiday Inn & Suites Vientiane and the Faculty of Engineering, National University of Laos, Vientiane, with support from the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Special Fund.
