HBNU–CMU International Capstone Design 2026 Kicks Off in South Korea

The Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University (CMU), led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Korrakot Yaibuathet Tippayawong, Vice Dean and Director of the Chiang Mai International Engineering School (CM-IES), together with 15 faculty members and students from the Faculty of Engineering, traveled to the Republic of Korea to participate in the HBNU–CMU International Capstone Design 2026 at Hanbat National University (HBNU) from September 7–11, 2026.
The program marks the 7th consecutive year of academic collaboration between the Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University and Hanbat National University. It aims to enhance students’ skills in engineering design, analytical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, communication and cross-cultural collaboration through project-based learning and joint activities involving students from both universities.
The 16-member delegation from the Faculty of Engineering, Chiang Mai University comprises the following faculty members and undergraduate students:
Asst. Prof. Dr. Korrakot Yaibuathet Tippayawong
Prof. Dr. Nakorn Tippayawong (Distinguished Professor)
Asst. Prof. Dr. Kampol Woradit

Mr. Thanakorn Kaweekul– Undergraduate Student, Mechanical Engineering
Mr. Korn Sriwattana– Undergraduate Student, Computer Engineering
Mr. Wachirawit Chaiyamat– Undergraduate Student, Computer Engineering
The program officially opened on September 8, 2026, at Hanbat National University. Prof. Yoontaek Lim, representing Hanbat National University, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Korrakot Yaibuathet Tippayawong, representing Chiang Mai University, delivered opening remarks and welcomed the participants. The opening was followed by academic activities and special lectures delivered by faculty members and guest speakers from both universities, providing opportunities to exchange knowledge and perspectives in engineering and prepare students for their collaborative project work.
At the heart of the program is the International Capstone Design, which brings CMU and HBNU students together in multidisciplinary teams to apply knowledge from their respective fields to analyze challenges, develop concepts, design solutions, and present their collaborative projects. This international learning environment enables students to work across differences in language, culture, and academic background while strengthening essential skills for future professional practice in a global context.
This year’s program is organized under the theme “Implementing Human-AI Collaborative Technologies for a Smart Campus,” with five project topics:
1. Human-AI Collaborative Energy Management for Smart Campus Buildings
2. AI-Assisted Campus Mobility and Accessibility Management
3. Human-AI Decision Support System for Emergency Response and Disaster Preparedness
4. AI-Optimized Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Operation for Smart Campus
5. Human-Centered AI Control of Classroom Environment and Occupant Comfort
In addition to the academic program, participants took part in a Cultural Excursion designed to deepen their understanding of Korean history, arts, culture, and ways of life. The group visited Jeongnimsa Temple Site, Buyeo National Museum, and Hanok Village, providing valuable learning experiences beyond the classroom while creating opportunities for CMU and HBNU students to strengthen friendships and engage in meaningful cultural exchange.
The HBNU–CMU International Capstone Design 2026 reflects the strong and longstanding academic partnership between Chiang Mai University and Hanbat National University in advancing international engineering education. Through hands-on project experience, cross-cultural teamwork, and academic exchange, the program provides students with opportunities to strengthen their professional competencies, broaden their international perspectives, and build lasting networks and friendships—essential foundations for becoming future engineers in an increasingly global and technology-driven world.
