CMU Engineering Delegation Visits NCKU to Forge New Frontiers in Semiconductor Innovation and Education

TAINAN, TAIWAN — In a strategic move to advance international academic and research collaboration, a delegation from the Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering at Chiang Mai University (CMU) visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) on May 28, 2026. The visit aimed to strengthen cross-border ties and cultivate new opportunities in education, research, and talent development within the critical fields of semiconductors and sustainable manufacturing.
The CMU delegation, featuring Assoc. Prof. Ukrit Mankong and Assoc. Prof. Doldet Tantraviwat, was warmly received by key NCKU faculty. Leading the welcoming committee were Prof. Wei-Chou Hsu, Dean of NCKU’s Academy of Innovative Semiconductor and Sustainable Manufacturing (AISSM), and Prof. Chin-Lung Yang, Vice Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering. They were joined by esteemed professors representing several specialized academic areas, including the Program on IC Design, the Program on Semiconductor Packaging and Testing, the Program on Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology, the Department of Electrical Engineering, and the Intelligent Manufacturing Research Center.
Bridging the Gap Between Academia and Industry
The visit culminated in several landmark frameworks designed to propel hands-on learning and cross-border innovation:
- Undergraduate Internships: Starting in 2026, select CMU students enrolled in semiconductor and related engineering programs will embark on internships at NCKU under the IIPP program. These students will engage in advanced research projects focusing on micro and nanoelectronics.
- Industry-Backed Graduate Training: Master’s candidates from CMU’s Faculty of Engineering will commence short-term training programs at NCKU, a venture supported by Delta Electronics (Thailand). This synergy highlights a shared commitment to building a highly skilled workforce equipped for the rapid evolution of the global tech landscape.
Expanding Horizons
Looking toward the future, both institutions have outlined ambitious plans to broaden their educational offerings. CMU and NCKU are set to initiate a double master’s degree program, alongside comprehensive student exchange initiatives and summer school opportunities. These programs will cover critical disciplines such as semiconductor engineering, electronics, optoelectronics, and net-zero manufacturing, fostering a well-rounded and globally minded student body.
